The cave paintings of the river Vero

The river Vero is situated in the area of the Sierra de Guara which is one of the most singular areas for cave paintings in the Iberian Peninsular and declared by UNESCO as being of
World Heritage.

The numerous caves which are found in its deep cliffs show, in a much reduced space,
scenes depicting the classical styles of pre-European history, which are most notably Palaeolithic, Levantine and Schematic art. The cave of the Trucho spring stands out as having the only known paintings of the Palaeolithic period in Aragon, the levantine places of Arpán, Muriecho, Chimiachas or Regacens, and the numerous schematic ones such as Mallata, Barfaluy or Gallinero.

The groups of hunters in the Palaeolithic period of some 22,000 years ago, the productive communities of the Neolithic and Bronze ages, have converted these spaces into a great sanctuary in which they expressed their beliefs, culture and creativity by means of enigmatic representations of animals, human beings, scenes and signs, which science tries to puzzle out.

In order to enjoy this art and to know about who created it, The Cultural Park offers a guide service for visitors to various cave shelters with access adapted for the public, and a visit to the Centre of Information of cave painting in Colungo..
